Itinerary
Day 1: ARRIVAL IN BLED.Bled is situated on the shore of a beautiful glacial lake. View its magical island church and clifftop castle at sunrise or sunset to see why it has earned a place as one of Slovenia's most popular attractions. Take a stroll around the lake and hike up to Mala Osojnica viewpoint at the western end for an excellent view from above.
This series of day-walks can be done in any order you desire.
Tour A easy: RADOVNA VALLEY – VINTGAR GORGE
11 km / ascent 200 m. Valleys & meadows.
You will be transferred through the lush green Radovna Valley to where the Radovna River has carved the 150 m deep Vintgar Gorge. Here you begin first of 3 easy walks. The trail leads along a wooden walkway through this beautiful gorge, beside thundering rapids culminating at the Sum Waterfall, and onwards via the lovely Katarina Church viewpoint. From here you get a nice alternative view of Bled Castle. A different photo to take home from all the others. From the car park you can also get a nice photo of Katarina Church with Mount Stol, the highest in the Karavanke range, in the background.
Tour B easy: RADOVLJICA – TALEZ HILL
13 km / ascent 400 m. Countryside walk.
After a short car transfer (15 min) you will be start walking at the town square in Radovljica. It's a short climb from the confluence of the two Sava Rivers up to the Jelovica high plateau, a popular walk for locals; mostly because it’s a great picnic spot to enjoy good food and cold beer amid the sweeping vistas of the opposing Karavanke mountain range. The return to Bled leads you along the quiet, shady riverside of the Sava Bohinjka.
Tour C easy: LAKE BLED – BOHINJSKA BELA
11 km round trip / ascent 270 m. Hillsides and panoramic walk.
As you approach Bled by road you cannot miss the jagged tooth-shaped rock pointing upwards from the cliffside of a nearby mountain. This is Babji Zob (the Hag's Tooth). At the foot of this cliff lies the little village of Bohinjska Bela, which is where you'll hike to today. You can climb up and visit the cave underneath the tooth, and have lunch by the Sava Bohinjka River. A visit to the lovely Baroque church of Saint Marjeta is a must.
Tour D hard: ZAVRSNICA - STOL
14.5 km / 10-hour hike / ascent 1,636 m. Mountain walk.
You will be transferred to Zavrsnica, the starting point. Here you start your first of 2 hard walks on the way towards Valvazor Hut. This long walk can be shortened if you turn back at Prešernova Hut, or you can continue to the summit of Mount Stol - tallest peak of the Karavanke mountain range, and feast your eyes on the stunning views across Bled and the surrounding Julian Alps landscape.
Tour E hard: PRISTAVA - GOLICA - PLANINA POD GOLICO
13 km / 8-hour hike / ascent 881 m. Mountain walk.
After a transfer to Pristava hut, you will hike towards Golica - the 4th highest peak in the Karavanke Mountains, and then continue to Planina pod Golico, especially known for the wild white narcissus flower which flourishes in mountain pastures around the village from late April to early May. The plants have been protected by law since 1949, and picking them is strictly forbidden.
Tour F hard: DRAGA - BEGUNJSCICA
13 km / 7.5-hour hike / ascent 1,370 m. Mountain walk.
Today's hiking tour up Begunjscica, a ridge mountain which commands great views of other surrounding mountains and down to the Sava Valley from Lake Bled to Bohinj. The landscape is magnificent. On a clear day the cities of Ljubljana, Kranj, Bled, Lesce, Jesenice are all visible. It is also known as the mountain of a hundred ravines.
