In 1891, a local photographer named Benedikt Lergetporer and Mayor Jakob Žumer of Gorje accidentally stumbled upon the gorge while exploring the Radovna River. They were mesmerized by what they found — deep emerald waters, thunderous rapids, and walls of limestone rising nearly 100 meters high.
Inspired by the discovery, the two men worked tirelessly to make the gorge accessible to visitors. In 1893, after the construction of wooden bridges and walkways, Vintgar Gorge officially opened to the public. Today, their vision allows thousands of hikers each year to experience this hidden gem safely — and in awe.
