Hiking the Famous Trail Around the Julian Alps
This popular self guided hike explores the southeastern Julian Alps, passing through valleys, plateaus, high passes, and small tourist spots. The trail follows the Sava, Bača, and Tolminka rivers, offering constant views of Mount Triglav. Along the way, you’ll learn about Slovenia’s iron works history, visit the homes of famous writers, and discover the importance of beekeeping. You’ll meet local farmers and cheese makers, and history enthusiasts can explore the region’s role in both World Wars.
A collection of the most spectacular, different grade walks, from medium to hard, it features walks along mountain ridges, meadows and valley floors, slowly progressing from east to west.
Itinerary
Arrive in Lake Bled, one of Slovenia’s most famous destinations. This starting point of the walking Juliana Trail features a glacial lake, the medieval Bled Castle perched on a cliff, and a picturesque island church accessible by traditional pletna boats. Enjoy a relaxing stroll along the lake’s shore, capturing perfect photos of the Lake Bled walking tour scenery. End your day with a soak in a thermal spa, rejuvenating after your journey.
After breakfast, a short transfer brings you to the starting point near Gorje. Begin your Triglav National Park hiking adventure along forested trails and open alpine meadows Slovenia, enjoying panoramic views of the Julian Alps. Descend from the Pokljuka Plateau into the breathtaking Bohinj Valley, passing through quaint Slovenian alpine villages. This stage is challenging but rewarding. Ascend past the former ski resort to Baška sedlo, where you can enjoy a snack “at the top of the world.” Take in sweeping Julian Alps views and scenic alpine trails Slovenia. Descend in the afternoon to the charming town of Podbrdo.

Hiking tour. Daily distances increase on some days and the terrain may be rugged underfoot with some hills but not too strenuous. Perfect for those with a relatively good level of fitness. The average sum of all daily ascents is between 100 m and 400 meters.

Getting to Bled
By plane: closest airport is Ljubljana (LJU). Several airlines serve it (check connections here). From the airport, you can travel to Bled by bus (change once, takes about 2 hrs) or book our transfer – see here below!
By train: Bled has two railway stations: Lesce-Bled on the Villach – Ljubljana mainline, 4 km from town center, you’d need to take a local bus. The other option is station Bled-Jezero on the Jesenice – Nova Gorica sideline; only a few trains a day. 2 km away from town center.
By bus: Flixbus stops at Bled.
By car: take exit Lesce from A1 motorway Ljubljana – Jesenice. Long term parking is available in Bled, but has to be booked in advance, please consult us.
