Pictoresque Hiking in Western Slovene Alps

A self-guided hut to hut walking holiday in the heart of the Julian Alps and along its mountain peaks. This is a stunning mountain hike, taking you through breathtaking alpine scenery and its many natural attractions, including Lake Bled & Lake Bohinj. The tour is suitable for fit and experienced walkers. It requires some experience of walking at high mountain levels and along narrow trails. This tour is not suitable for children under 12 years.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins in Lake Bled, a scenic Alpine town perfect for preparing for your Julian Alps Peak Walk. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the emerald lake and visit the island church, one of Slovenia’s most photographed spots. Explore the medieval Bled Castle perched on a cliff for panoramic views, and savor the local cuisine. This introduction showcases the perfect blend of Slovenia’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, ideal for travelers seeking self-guided Julian Alps hiking.

Start your 8-day hut-to-hut hike in the Julian Alps at the Pokljuka High Plateau (1,280 m). Trek through dense fir forests and lush pastures while breathing fresh mountain air. Stop at Lipanska Hut for a traditional lunch and continue across the Karavanke range, the Krma valley, and the Bohinj mountains. Arrive at the Pokljuka Biathlon Centre for your overnight stay.

Ascend into the heart of Triglav National Park toward the peaks of the Julian Alps, passing Vodnikov Dom Hut. Enjoy stunning views of Mt. Triglav (2,864 m) and surrounding summits. Your overnight stay at Planika Hut, directly beneath Triglav, offers an unforgettable Alpine experience. This segment highlights the best of self-guided Julian Alps hiking tours, allowing you to explore the majestic mountains at your own pace.

Note: Your main luggage from Pokljuka will be transported to your Bohinj hotel for Day 6.

Cross the Hribarice Pass at 2,358 m and admire Zeleno Jezero (Green Lake), one of the seven Triglav lakes. Trek through the Valley of the Triglav Lakes to reach Koča pri Triglavskih Jezerih, located beside Double Lake. This section of the Julian Alps Peak Walk is perfect for photography, hiking, and appreciating the natural wonders of Triglav National Park.

Hike west to Black Lake, the lowest and warmest of the Triglav lakes, surrounded by dense forest below Komarča rock face. End the day at Komna Hut, enjoying a breathtaking sunset over Lake Bohinj.

Optional Detour: Explore the Goldhorn Trail toward Bovec for a longer Julian Alps self-guided hike.

Descend into Bohinj Valley and visit the iconic Savica Waterfall, cascading 78 meters into Lake Bohinj. Stroll along the northern shore to Ribčev Laz, enjoy local homemade schnapps, and reflect on your Julian Alps Peak Walk journey.

Relax by Lake Bohinj or explore the Upper Bohinj Valley. Hike to Rudnica Hill for panoramic farewell views of the lake and mountains. Capture memorable photos and savor the final day of your self-guided Julian Alps hiking tour.

Getting to Bled

By plane: closest airport is Ljubljana (LJU). Several airlines serve it (check connections here). From the airport you can travel to Bled by bus (change once, takes about 2 hrs) or book our transfer (faster – 20 mins) – see here below!

By train: Bled has two railway stations: Lesce-Bled on the Villach – Ljubljana mainline, 4 kms from town centre, you’d need to take a local bus. The other option is Bled-Jezero on the Jesenice – Nova Gorica sideline; only a few trains a day. 2 kms away from town centre.

By busFlixbus stops at Lake Bled.

By car: take exit Lesce from A1 motorway Ljubljana – Jesenice. Please consult us about parking options in Bled.

By train: Bohinj has a railway station at Bohinjska Bistrica, 5 km from your last hotel. It is on the Jesenice – Nova Gorica sideline, only a few trains a day. Useful for travel in all directions

By car: if your car is in Kranjska Gora, you can get there by local bus (change once in Lesce, travel time is around 2 hrs) or we can transfer – please see here bellow!
