This self-guided hiking tour is a collection of different grade walks. However – none of them have a climber’s rating. The trip leads you along mountain ridges, through meadows, and across valley floors, gradually descending from east to west. The picturesque alpine trail offers breathtaking views at every twist and turn.

Itinerary

Begin your unforgettable Slovenia hiking tour in Jezersko, a tranquil alpine valley in northern Slovenia, framed by the majestic Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Karawanks. Jezersko offers a wealth of scenic trails suitable for all fitness levels, from gentle walks around Lake Planšar to more challenging ascents like Veliki Zvoh. Wander through lush forests, past crystal-clear streams, and reach panoramic viewpoints overlooking the valley and surrounding peaks. Along the way, observe vibrant alpine flora and fauna, and admire the traditional alpine architecture scattered throughout the landscape.

Today’s hike leads you just above the tree line to Češka Koča, one of Slovenia’s oldest alpine huts, standing for over 100 years. From here, you are rewarded with sweeping views into two parallel alpine valleys, a perfect start for photography enthusiasts exploring photography-friendly hiking tours Slovenia. The return route passes Shepherds Lake, a serene spot where the reflections of surrounding peaks shimmer in the water, before returning to Jezersko.

Today, tackle the lesser-known summit of Virnikov Grintavec in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, offering a rewarding experience for avid hikers. The trail begins near Jezersko, winding through dense forests and vibrant alpine meadows. As you ascend, the terrain opens to panoramic vistas of the Julian Alps and the Karawanks. The final stretch to the summit requires moderate effort, but the breathtaking views and serene sense of solitude make it an unforgettable part of your Slovenia hiking tour.

A short transfer by car brings you to Ljubelj, on the Austrian border, where your hike begins. The trail passes through a historic underground tunnel originally dug by merchants to shorten travel between Carniola and Carinthia. Emerging on the other side, follow the old shepherds’ route into the peaceful Draga Valley, leading you to the historic village of Begunje, famous as the hometown of the Slavko Avsenik / Oberkrainer band. Nearby, explore the ruins of Kamen Castle, a testament to the region’s rich history.

Enjoy a panoramic hike at the foot of the Karawanke Range, beginning with a gentle ascent to St. Peter’s Church, built as a lookout during the days of Turkish raids. The trail continues through quiet pastoral landscapes and offers stunning views of the Julian Alps, perfect for nature photography enthusiasts. The day concludes in Lake Bled, a world-famous glacial lake renowned for its island church and the medieval castle perched high above the town. Overnight in a 4* hotel, such as Hotel Savica, providing comfort and relaxation after a scenic day on your Slovenia hiking tour.

A short morning transfer brings you to the Pokljuka Plateau (1,280 m), a hub of Julian Alps hiking trails. Hike over expansive mountain pastures and through dense fir forests to Lipanska Hut, where you can enjoy a typical hikers’ lunch. The afternoon route follows a panoramic trail, offering stunning views of the Karawanke Range, the Pokljuka Plateau, Krma Valley, and the Bohinj Mountains.

Today’s route begins from the Pokljuka Plateau, leading through traditional alpine pastures and rustic farmhouses. Pause at a viewpoint for breathtaking vistas over Bohinj Valley, then descend through the historic village of Studor, where time seems to stand still. Your hike ends at Lake Bohinj, a true gem of Triglav National Park, with its calm waters reflecting surrounding peaks and a charming lakeside village perfect for exploring or photography.

After breakfast, your Slovenia hiking tour concludes. You may also choose to extend your stay or continue hiking along the Goldhorn Trail to explore even more of the Julian Alps’ spectacular scenery.
