Is this tour for me?

Best suited to very fit, regular hikers prepared for long and strenuous walking days. Terrain is varied and sometimes uneven or steep, but without seriously technical passages.

Beyond the lakes, into Slovenia’s hidden valleys

We like this route because it begins with two places almost everyone knows—Bled and Bohinj—and then gradually leaves familiar Slovenia behind. After crossing Pokljuka’s forests and high meadows, it continues through the secluded Bača Valley, where small villages sit high above the river and few visitors stop.

This is not the easier of our two Juliana Trail journeys. Several stages are long, with substantial ascent and descent, but no technical high-alpine passages. The reward is a more intimate side of Slovenia: forest plateaus, local farms and quiet communities on the way to Tolmin.

This tour is ideal for:

  • Very fit, regular walkers comfortable with stages of up to 24 km and substantial ascent and descent.
  • Travellers who want to go beyond Bled and Bohinj into Slovenia’s lesser-known valleys and villages.

Prefer turquoise rivers and broader mountain views? Our Juliana Trail – Soča Valley & Alpine Views follows the other half of the route through Tolmin, Kobarid, Bovec, Tarvisio and Kranjska Gora to Bled.

Frequently asked questions

Is this section of the Juliana Trail suitable for beginners?

No. Daily stages reach 24 km, with up to 930 m of ascent and 1,050 m of descent. Very good fitness is required, although the route does not include climbing or technical high-alpine passages.

What kind of paths and surfaces should I expect?

The route combines natural trails, forest tracks, farm roads, quiet lanes and some paved sections. The terrain can occasionally be steep or uneven.

Yes. One piece of luggage per person, up to 23 kg, is transferred between accommodations, so you walk with only a daypack.

Can I combine both sections of the Juliana Trail?

Itinerary

Arrive in Lake Bled, one of Slovenia’s most famous destinations. This starting point of the walking Juliana Trail features a glacial lake, the medieval Bled Castle perched on a cliff, and a picturesque island church accessible by traditional pletna boats. Enjoy a relaxing stroll along the lake’s shore, capturing perfect photos of the Lake Bled scenery. End your day with a soak in a thermal spa, rejuvenating after your journey.

Begin your Triglav National Park hiking adventure along forested trails and open alpine meadows enjoying panoramic views of the Julian Alps. Explore the peaceful Pokljuka Plateau, a haven for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. This section is perfect for self-guided hiking, offering a balance of moderate hiking and scenic viewpoints

Descend from the Pokljuka Plateau into the breathtaking Bohinj Valley, passing through quaint alpine villages. Stop at a local alpine museum and explore Lake Bohinj, a glacial lake surrounded by mountains. Optional panoramic lake cruise offers a unique perspective of this natural wonder, perfect for photography-friendly hiking.

An easier stage today as you leave Lake Bohinj behind. Hike through village pastures to Bohinjska Bistrica, known for its wellness programs. Relax and recharge for the more demanding stages ahead on this multi-day hiking tour.

This stage is challenging but rewarding. Ascend past the former ski resort to Baška sedlo, where you can enjoy a snack “at the top of the world.” Take in sweeping Julian Alps views and scenic alpine trails. Descend in the afternoon to the charming town of Podbrdo.

A stage for solitude and nature lovers. Hike high above the Bača River valley, along quiet alpine trails, passing remote villages. Experience the warm hospitality of locals in this serene, off-the-beaten-path section of the walking Juliana Trail.

Walk through a valley of historical significance. Discover monuments from both World Wars and learn about Slovenia’s cultural heritage. Reach the turquoise Soča River, where optional boat rides highlight one of the most beautiful Slovenia waterfalls hikes. The final stage follows the Bača Valley to Most na Soči, where the river meets the turquoise Soča. From here, the route crosses the historic landscape above the valley before descending to Tolmin. If time allows, visit Tolmin Gorges after arriving.

After breakfast, conclude your walking Juliana Trail adventure or extend your stay. Options include hiking the North-Western loop of the Juliana Trail or continuing along the Alpe Adria Trail to Cividale del Friuli.

Guest Reviews

Thank you for organising the Juliana Alpine Trail for us last week.

It was our first time in Slovenia. We were very impressed. The countryside is beautiful, clean and tidy with no litter. The roads and paths were well maintained and very quiet. The people we met were very friendly and spoke very good English.
The trail was well marked, and the signed boards were informative and helpful. The walking sections through the high forests and the glacial valley meadows and farms were the best part for me.

Thank you all for putting together this fabulous Juliana Trail trip for us. We really enjoyed exploring this part of Slovenia, and appreciated the comfortable accommodations at the end of each day. Hvala!
