Technical Difficulty
Technical difficulty describes how demanding the terrain is underfoot. It is different from our Activity Level, which reflects the physical effort required, such as daily distance, ascent and walking time.
Technical difficulty considers the type and condition of the trail, steepness, uneven or rocky terrain, narrow sections, exposure and the level of sure-footedness required. A tour can therefore be physically demanding but technically easy – or relatively short but technically more challenging.
Technical Level 1 – Easy
Walking is mainly on good, well-maintained paths, tracks and easy trails. The terrain is generally even and there are no technically demanding sections. No special mountain hiking experience is required.
Technical Level 2 – Moderate
Routes may include uneven mountain paths, stones, roots, steeper sections and natural surfaces. Basic sure-footedness is useful and occasionally required, but there are no seriously exposed or technically difficult passages.
Technical Level 3 – Challenging
Expect steeper, rocky or narrow mountain paths and longer sections of rough terrain. Good sure-footedness, balance and previous mountain hiking experience are recommended. Some sections may require extra care because of steep slopes or exposure.
Technical Level 4 – Expert
These routes include demanding mountain terrain, exposed passages or secured sections. Good mountain experience, excellent sure-footedness and a head for heights are required. Some passages may require the use of hands for balance or progression.
Activity Level vs. Technical Level
Our two ratings describe different aspects of a hiking tour. Activity Level tells you how much physical effort to expect, while Technical Level describes how difficult the terrain itself is.
For example, a long hike on good paths may have a high Activity Level but a low Technical Level. A shorter mountain route with rocky or exposed terrain may have a lower Activity Level but a higher Technical Level.
We recommend considering both ratings when choosing your hiking holiday.
