The all-time classic walking holiday of Slovenia

The Lakes And Valleys Walking Tour takes you through glorious alpine scenery and panoramic vistas. This walking tour showcases the renowned Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, as well as the captivating Mt. Triglav National Park. It’s an ideal walking tour tailored for those who relish breathtaking mountain panoramas and charming valleys. This route is well-suited for hikers with a moderate level of fitness and comes highly recommended for photography aficionados.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins in the alpine town of Kranjska Gora, nestled at the foot of the Julian Alps. After checking into your accommodation, you can take a short walk around the town to familiarize yourself with the surroundings. Kranjska Gora is known for its scenic alpine valleys and lush forests, making it an ideal starting point for your Slovenia walking holiday. Take in the views of the surrounding peaks, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and prepare for the days ahead. The evening is perfect for a relaxing dinner at a local restaurant, sampling Slovenian specialties and planning the first day of your hike.

The second day takes you along scenic trails to Lake Jasna, a serene alpine lake surrounded by majestic peaks. The walk continues through the Planica Valley, famous for its ski jumping history and panoramic views. This section of the tour provides the perfect introduction to the Julian Alps walking holidays experience, with gentle trails, cascading streams, and peaceful meadows. The terrain is moderate, allowing you to enjoy the landscape without exhausting yourself, while still offering opportunities for photography and wildlife observation.

This walk leads you through forests and mountain meadows to the summit of Mt. Peč (1,508 m), where the borders of Slovenia, Italy, and Austria converge. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Julian Alps, Carnian Alps, and the Hohe Tauern range, Austria’s highest alpine peaks. The trail then gently descends through the valley, guiding you to the source of the picturesque Sava River, Slovenia’s longest, before returning to Kranjska Gora.

Transfer through the lush Radovna Valley, surrounded by towering mountain peaks, to the stunning Vintgar Gorge, where the Radovna River has carved a 150-meter-deep chasm. From there, you can walk along a wooden walkway that winds through the gorge, continuing on to the world-famous Lake Bled. Along the way, enjoy a stop at the charming Katarina Church viewpoint.

On your walking holiday now enjoy a leisurely stroll around Bled, a charming town nestled on the shores of a stunning glacial lake. The medieval castle perched on a cliff overlooks the lake’s iconic island church, creating a postcard-perfect scene. For the best views and photos of the lake, church, castle, and the Karavanke mountain range, take a hike up to the Mala Osojnica viewpoint on the lake’s western side. Wrap up your day by indulging in a slice of the local specialty, Bled’s famous cream cake, “Kremšnita,” at one of the delightful lakeside cafés.

You’ll be driven up to the scenic Pokljuka Plateau, where your hike begins, taking you through mountain pastures and past rustic farmhouses to a breathtaking viewpoint over Bohinj Valley. On your descent, stop at the historic village of Studor, where you can step back in time and explore its charming past. Your journey concludes at Lake Bohinj, a true gem nestled in the heart of Triglav National Park, alongside a quaint village on the lakeshore.

Spend the day exploring the serene beauty of this peaceful alpine lake, nestled beneath the peaks of the Julian Alps. Enjoy a refreshing swim in its crystal-clear waters and savor the taste of Bohinj trout. At the lake’s western end, take a short hike to Savica Waterfall, the source of both the lake and the Sava Bohinjka River. For a breathtaking view of Mount Triglav, the Julian Alps‘ highest peak, ride the cable car up to Vogel Mountain, perched at 1,532 meters. In the evening, unwind in one of the cozy village pubs and sample the local homemade honey brandy.

After breakfast departure or extension of your stay. You may wish to continue hiking onward over our Goldhorn Trail!
