The widow’s motive was simple yet deeply moving – she believed that by hanging the bell in the church tower, she would honor her husband’s memory and protect the island from misfortune.
The bell, crafted in Italy in 1532, was a magnificent work of art. Its journey to the island was no small feat, and the widow faced numerous challenges. The voyage across the lake was perilous, with strong winds and unpredictable waters. Despite all adversities, her determination propelled her forward.
However, tragedy struck as the widow reached the island. In her exhaustion, she slipped and fell into the cold, unforgiving waters of the lake. The weight of the heavy bell dragged her down, and her life seemed lost.
But, as the legend tells, the sound of the Bell rang out across the entire island. Miraculously, the bell’s tones reached the ears of the churchgoers, who hurried to the shore to witness the widow struggling in the water. They quickly organized a rescue mission and saved her life.
Today, the tiny bell stands as a testament to the enduring love and selflessness of the widow. It also symbolizes the protection and fortune of the island. Visitors to Bled island can climb the 99 stone steps to the church and ring it , believing that it brings luck and joy.
The legend of the Bled Bell has become an integral part of Bled’s history, reminding us of the enduring power of love and the sacrifices people make for those they hold dear.
