Jezersko – The legend of the Witches
According to the story, centuries ago, the peaceful valley of Jezersko was a haven for witches who were believed to possess magical powers. These witches, skilled in herbs and potions, were known to roam the forests and mountains, living in harmony with the natural world.
Legend has it that the witches would gather at the foot of Mount Ojstrica, a peak in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, to perform their rituals under the light of the full moon. They were said to be able to control the weather, summon storms, and heal ailments with their mystical potions. While some villagers feared them, others sought out their help, knowing that the witches had a deep connection to the land and its secrets.
However, not all of the witches‘ powers were used for good. As time passed, a group of jealous villagers grew fearful of the witches‘ influence and accused them of dark magic. This led to a series of mysterious events, including sudden storms and unexplained illnesses, which the villagers believed were the witches‘ doing.
The legend says that one night, a powerful storm ravaged the village, and the witches, believing it was a sign of their downfall, vanished into the mountains. Some believe they were never seen again, while others say that the witches still haunt the peaks of Jezersko, their spirits protecting the land and watching over the village.
Folklore and beliefs in the Jezersko region
Today, the story of the witches is a beloved part of Jezersko’s folklore. Some locals even claim to hear the whispers of the witches in the winds that sweep through the valley. Whether truth or myth, the tale adds a mystical layer to the already magical atmosphere of this alpine village.
