Triglav National Park – Hiking & Cycling in the Julian Alps

Triglav National Park – Slovenia’s Alpine Jewel

Located in the heart of the Julian Alps, Triglav National Park is Slovenia’s only national park and one of the most spectacular natural areas in the Alps. Named after Mount Triglav (2,864 m), the country’s highest peak and national symbol, the park protects an extraordinary alpine landscape of mountains, forests, rivers and glacial lakes.

For outdoor lovers, Triglav National Park offers some of the best hiking and cycling scenery in Central Europe.

A Landscape Shaped by Mountains and Water

Covering around 840 km², the park includes dramatic limestone peaks, deep alpine valleys, high mountain pastures and crystal-clear rivers.

One of its most famous natural features is the emerald Soča River, while Lake Bohinj, the largest natural lake in Slovenia, serves as a gateway to many hiking routes.

Water flowing from the park feeds two major European river systems: the Sava River flowing toward the Black Sea and the Soča River flowing toward the Adriatic.

Hiking in Triglav National Park

Triglav National Park is a paradise for hikers. A network of well-marked trails connects valleys, mountain huts and alpine viewpoints.

Popular hiking areas include:

  • Vršič Pass panoramic trails

Long-distance routes such as the Juliana Trail and parts of the Alpe-Adria Trail also pass through the region.
