Paradise of alpine kingdom of Zlatorog
Walking Goldhorn Path follows the legendary trails above Bohinj, where, according to alpine folklore, the Julian Alps were once ruled by Zlatorog – the Goldenhorn. The proud ibex guarded a hidden treasure in the heart of Triglav National Park, carried in her golden horns, until she vanished back into the wilderness — leaving the true treasure of the mountains to those who walk these paths.
Today, the Walking Goldhorn Path is a scenic 5-day hiking holiday designed for leisure hikers, couples and nature lovers who want to experience Triglav National Park at a relaxed pace. With comfortable daily stages, alpine lakes, waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints, it is ideal for walkers looking for an immersive yet accessible hiking experience in Slovenia.
As pre-trips you may consider our walks Lakes and Valleys and Three Lakes Walks. With a moderate adjustment it can also be combined with our Julian Alps Peak Walk. Please ask for a detailed advice.
Itinerary
Your Hiking Slovenia journey begins in the charming mountain village of Ribčev Laz, located on the edge of Triglav National Park. This area, in the heart of the Julian Alps, is famous for its crystal-clear lake, dramatic mountain backdrops, and tranquil alpine valleys. Bohinj serves as an ideal base for exploring the region and starting your short hikes.
Check into a comfortable 4-star hotel, such as Hotel Jezero, which offers modern amenities and stunning views of Lake Bohinj. Take some time to stroll along the lake’s edge, breathe in the fresh alpine air, and prepare your mind and body for the adventures ahead. This gentle introduction to Hiking Slovenia allows you to adjust to the elevation while enjoying the serene surroundings.
In the evening, savor traditional Slovenian cuisine—perhaps a plate of fresh Bohinj trout or a hearty mountain stew. Your guides will give an overview of the upcoming hikes, setting the tone for your immersive Julian Alps Hiking experience.
The second day of your Hiking Slovenia adventure takes you from the northern shores of Lake Bohinj into the highlands above the Komna plateau, deep within Triglav National Park. The trail starts gently along the lake, framed by steep mountain slopes, providing some of the most iconic views in Julian Alps Hiking.
A key highlight is the Savica Waterfall, one of Slovenia’s most famous waterfalls. With a drop of 70 meters, it originates from the Valley of the Seven Triglav Lakes. The waterfall’s dramatic scenery inspired the Slovenian epic poem Krst pri Savici, linking nature and culture in a way that is unique to Hiking Slovenia. Pause to capture photographs, feel the spray, and enjoy the sheer power of the cascading water.
The trail then ascends a wide forest path to Komna Hut, perched on a scenic plateau with panoramic views of Lake Bohinj. This stage exemplifies the best of Julian Alps Hiking: alpine meadows, crystal-clear streams, and forested slopes leading to breathtaking viewpoints. Spend the night at Komna Hut, enjoying the cozy atmosphere and a traditional mountain dinner.
Day three of your Hiking Slovenia journey takes you across the historic highlands that were once part of the Isonzo Front during World War I. Walking along narrow paths filled with blooming wildflowers, you will notice remnants of the past—military bunkers, trenches, and the former Austrian Imperial Army barracks, now serving as shepherds’ stables. These sights add a fascinating historical layer to your Julian Alps Hiking experience.
Your route leads to the enchanting Krn Lake, a romantic alpine lake surrounded by meadows and rugged peaks. It is the perfect spot for a relaxing lunch break while taking in the beauty of Triglav National Park. This stop exemplifies why Hiking Slovenia is so beloved: the combination of natural beauty, tranquility, and a sense of timelessness.
From Krn Lake, descend into the Lepena Valley, where you will spend the night in a mountain hut such as Lepena Hut. The valley provides a peaceful retreat after a day of Julian Alps Hiking, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Evening activities include stargazing, enjoying local cuisine, and reflecting on the day’s journey through Hiking Slovenia.
On day four, your Hiking Slovenia adventure continues along the Soča River, one of the most famous rivers in Slovenia, known for its vivid turquoise waters. The trail starts at Šumnikov Gaj, a park featuring lively water springs that signal the start of an unforgettable day in the heart of the Julian Alps Hiking region.
Follow the Soča River as it winds through narrow gorges in the Trenta Valley. Along the way, marvel at the vibrant river, lush forests, and dramatic peaks, all within Triglav National Park. This stage highlights why Hiking Slovenia is world-renowned for combining adventure, beauty, and tranquility in a single journey.
Your destination is Bovec, often called the adventure capital of Slovenia. After checking into a 3-star hotel such as Hotel Alp, you can rest and explore the town. In the evening, enjoy local delicacies, take a stroll along the river, or simply relax and reflect on the incredible scenery you experienced during your Julian Alps Hiking journey.
After breakfast, your 5-day Hiking Slovenia trip concludes, though Bovec offers ample opportunities for adventure and exploration. Known as Slovenia’s adrenaline hub, Bovec provides options for white-water rafting, paragliding, canyoning, or exploring more trails along the turquoise Soča River. The Turquoise River Walks program is a particularly relaxing way to continue your adventure and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Whether you are departing or extending your trip, this itinerary has offered a comprehensive introduction to Hiking Slovenia, including the wonders of Triglav National Park and the dramatic peaks of the Julian Alps. Each day combined scenic alpine trails, cultural history, and moments of pure outdoor adventure.
